Silk Bedding: Start With the Pillow or the Duvet?

by Yu Tang 03 Mar 2023

Strip the bed on laundry day and the pieces stop looking like one thing. There is the case that fits your pillow, the cover you can remove, and the duvet insert underneath. Online, they often sit together under “silk bedding.” At home, each has a different job.

So before comparing colours or fabric weights, ask which part of the bed you actually want to change. A pillowcase will not replace the insert inside your duvet cover. A duvet will not give you a new surface on your pillow. That sounds obvious until a photograph makes the whole bed look like one purchase.

If it is the pillow

Start with the pillow you own, not the size name in your head. Lay a tape measure across its width and length, then compare those numbers with the selected case. The Absolute Pillowcase is listed as 22 momme mulberry silk. Its Standard/Queen size is 20 × 30 inches; King is 20 × 36 inches. “Single” means one case and “Pair” means two, with availability varying by option.

Those details are less glamorous than choosing a colour, but they save the disappointment of a case that will not fit or a parcel with fewer pieces than you expected. If you are happy with your duvet insert and simply want to change the fabric on your pillow, you can stop here.

If it is the duvet insert

A duvet insert belongs inside a removable cover. If the insert is the part you mean to replace, measure the cover you plan to use before choosing a size. “Queen” on two labels does not always give you the same dimensions.

The Absolute Duvet page lists All-Season and Winter options in four sizes. As one example, the Queen is listed at 87 × 90 inches. Its approximate filling weight is 1,200 g in All-Season and 1,920 g in Winter. These numbers describe the filling, not the weight of the entire duvet. Check the selected size and option on the product page before ordering; availability can differ.

The option names are a starting point, not a promise about how a duvet will feel in your particular room. The cover you use, the room itself and your own preference matter. If you are unsure which option to choose, ask us about the specific listing rather than trying to make a fabric number answer every question.

Care is part of the choice

Whatever you choose, think about the next laundry day. A pillowcase, a removable duvet cover and a filled insert can have different instructions. Read the sewn-in label on the exact item before cleaning it; the cover's instructions do not automatically apply to the insert. Our silk care guide begins there.

You do not have to remake the whole bed at once. Choose the piece you were reaching for on laundry day. Once you know which one that is, the measurements and care instructions are there to help you bring the right thing home.
