How to Care for a Silk-Filled Duvet

On laundry day, you take the cover off and the filled duvet is left on the bed. The cover may be ready for the wash. The insert may need something different. Before cleaning either one, read the sewn-in care label on each item.

For everyday use

Use a removable cover that fits the insert. When it needs cleaning, follow the cover's own label. With the cover off, check the duvet insert for dampness or marks. Follow the insert's label for airing and other care; a washable cover does not mean the filling can go through the same wash.

If something spills on the insert

For fresh liquid, gently blot the surface with a clean cloth. Avoid rubbing or pressing moisture into the filling. Then check the insert's own label before using water, detergent, a machine or a professional cleaning service. A method that is right for a pillowcase or cover may be wrong for a filled duvet.

Before putting it away

Store the insert only when it is fully dry. Follow its label for airing and storage, and avoid leaving heavy items on top of it for a long time. Check it again when you bring it out for use.
