Silk is becoming increasingly popular in the North American market, and as more people discover the amazing qualities of this luxurious fabric, it can be a bit daunting for those who are new to silk to figure out how to properly care for and clean these delicate items. But don't worry, just follow my tips and I guarantee your silk pajamas or bedding will look as stunning as the day you bought them!

Here are a few tips to help you care for your silk products:

1. Choose a gentle detergent according to the care instruction: Before washing, it is recommended that you check the care label on your clothing. Some silk products can only be dry cleaned and should not be washed with water, such as silk-filled products like silk quilts, silk-filled clothing, and silk sleep masks, to avoid snagging, lumping, or other issues when they come into contact with water. For other products that can be washed with water, it is best to hand wash them to avoid damaging the silk. It is recommended to use a neutral detergent that does not contain enzymes or a detergent specifically for silk, or to use shampoo instead. Shampoo is a good choice since it also contains protein, which is similar to the protein found in silk fabric and will not cause significant damage or corrosion.

2. Wash with cold water: When hand washing, the water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees Celsius, and soaking time should not exceed 15 minutes. You can pour an appropriate amount of silk detergent into clean water, dissolve it fully, and then put your product in the water, rubbing it gently to avoid snagging, fuzziness, yellowing, or other issues. Silk products may lose color when washed with water, so it is important to separate light-colored and dark-colored items and avoid bleaching. It is also not recommended to sun-dry or tumble-dry silk products.

3. Use auxiliary agents wisely: You can add a small amount of lemon juice or vinegar during washing to effectively prevent silk from hardening and to help maintain the color of the fabric.

4. Washing techniques and drying: Gently squeeze the water out of the product instead of twisting it, and hang it up to air-dry in the shade or fold it in half and hang it up to dry. Avoid exposing silk products to direct sunlight, and do not use a dryer.

5. Storage of silk products: Silk clothing should be stored hanging up. The storage boxes and cabinets should be kept clean, dry, and as airtight as possible to prevent dust contamination. Do not spray air freshener or perfume inside the storage area, and do not use mothballs. For thin clothing such as underwear, shirts, pants, skirts, and pajamas, they should be washed and ironed before being stored. For autumn and winter clothing, such as jackets, overcoats, and cheongsams that are not easy to wash, they should be dry-cleaned and ironed to prevent mold or moth damage.

6. Ironing silk: Ironing can help sterilize and kill insects. To iron silk products, wait until they are about 70-80% dry and then evenly spray them with water before ironing. The ironing temperature should be controlled between 130 and 140 degrees Celsius. Do not directly touch the silk with the iron, as this may create scorch marks. It is recommended to cover the silk with a damp cloth and then iron it to prevent high temperatures from making the silk brittle or even burning it.
