Silk Care Basics: Read the Label First

A silk pillowcase might be ready for one wash routine while a lined mask or filled duvet needs another. The simplest way to avoid guessing is to read the sewn-in label on the piece in your hands before the water runs. Fabric, lining, dye and construction can all change what that label asks you to do.

If the label permits hand washing

Use the water temperature and detergent specified on the label. Handle the fabric gently, keep colors separate, and avoid bleach, scrubbing, twisting, and prolonged soaking. Rinse according to the label, then dry as directed. Keep silk away from direct heat and strong sunlight while drying.

If the label says dry clean or do not wash

Do not assume a method used for a washable pillowcase is safe for a filled duvet or lined eye mask. Contact a qualified cleaner and show them the item's care label. If the label is missing or unclear, contact The Silk Space before cleaning.

Storage and pressing

Store clean, fully dry items in a dry place without heavy compression. If the care label permits ironing, use its temperature and pressing instructions. Test any treatment in an inconspicuous area when appropriate.
